Xylem, phloem and extra Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What does the xylem do?
A
Transport water and minerals from roots to leaves
2
Q
What does the phloem do?
A
Transports sugars (from photosynthesis) from the leaves to the rest of the plant
3
Q
How is the xylem adapted to transport water and nutrients to the plant?
A
Xylem cells are hollow and have no end walls allowing for continuous water flow
4
Q
How is the phloem adapted to transport sugars to the plant
A
It’s made from sieve tube elements with perforated end walls to allow transport for sugars. The companion cells provide energy for active transport in the phloem
5
Q
What did companion cells do?
A
They provide energy for active transport for the sugar in the phloem
