Y9 Bioenergetics Flashcards
(28 cards)
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water → oxygen + glucose
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6CO₂ + 6H₂O →
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
How do plants get nutrients?
Plants get nutrients thorugh roots in the ground, precipitation and from the air
What is photosynthesis the process of
Photosynthesis is the process of where plants make their own glucose
What chemical in the leaf makes the leaf green?
Chlorophyll
Where does photosynthesis take place?
Photosynthesis only happens in the green part of the leaf
What are limiting factors of photosynthesis?
-light intensity
-carbon dioxide level
-temperature
What is the stomata and what does it do?
The stomata are tiny holes in the underside of leaves. They allow gas exchange- carbons dioxide in, and oxygen+ water vapour out
What is the xylem and what does it do?
Xylem are a tube of dead cells, strengthened by lignin.
The xylem transports water and dissolves minerals around the plant
What does the phloem do?
The phloem transports food molecules (glucose)
Where does aerobic respiration take place?
Aerobic respiration takes place in the mitochondria of cells
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose+ Oxygen—>carbon dioxide+ water(+ENERGY)
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and micro-organisms?
glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in animals?
glucose → lactic acid + energy
Where does aerobic respiration take place?
Aerobic respiration takes place when oxygen from the lungs reacts with glucose
Why does anaerobic respiration happen?
Anaerobic respiration happens as a result of the body not being able to get enough oxygen to the muscles quickly enough to
What causes the muscles to ache in anaerobic respiration?
A build up of lactic acid
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without oxygen
What is aerobic respiration?
Reputation with oxygen
What is starch?
Starch is a complex carbohydrate found in plants and animals
What are chloroplasts?
Chloroplasts are a cell structure found in green plants that contain chlorophyll
What is the definition of oxygen debt
The amount of oxygen that the body needs to break down lactic acid after muscles undergoes anaerobic respiration
What is chlorophyll?
Pigment found in plants which are used in photosynthesis(give green plants their colour)
What does Endothermic mean?
Chemical reactions which takes in heat
