03 Skeletal Muscle Activity Flashcards
(17 cards)
Special functional properties of muscle fibers
- Irritabilty
- Contractility
- Extensibility
- Elasticity
- known as responsiveness
- the ability to receive and respond to a stimulus
irritability
The ability to for sibling shorten when adequately stimulated
contractility
ability of muscle fibers to stretch
extensibility
ability to recoil and resume their resting length after being stretched
elasticity
nerves stimulus and action potential
- Motor unit
- Axon
- Axon terminals
- Neuromuscular junction
- Synpatic cleft
consist of one neuron and all the skeletal muscle fibers it stimulates
motor unit
Long threadlike extension of the neuron
Axon
branches of axon which forms junctions with the sarcolemma of a different muscle cell
Axon terminals
contain synaptic vesicles filled with a chemical referred to as a neurotransmitter (acetylcholine/ ACh)
Neuromuscular junction
gap between the nerve endings and the muscle fiber membranes filled with interstitial fluid
Synaptic cleft
Muscle Responses to Increasingly Rapid Stimulation
The muscle goes through quick cycles of contraction with a short reaction phase for each
Unfused/Incomplete tetanus
Muscle Responses to Increasingly Rapid Stimulation
contractions become continuous because the similar frequency is so high that the reaction phase disappears completely
Fused/Complete Tetanus
Muscle Response to Stronger Stimuli
- When only a few cells are stimulated, the muscle as a whole contracts only slightly
- When all the motor units are active and all the muscle fibers are stimulated, the muscle contraction is as strong as it can get
unable to contract, even though it is still being stimulated because of working without stress
muscle fatigue
happens when a person is not able to take an oxygen fast enough to keep the fat muscles supplied with all the oxygen they need when they are working vigorously
oxygen deficit
really occurs, but it happens when people literally collapse when their muscles become fatigue and could no longer work
True muscle fatigue
