1 Flashcards
(31 cards)
A,……r is the performance- improving base coat for
paint (a base coat that creates the foundation for a
flawless paint job.)
prime
Use a primer, then two coats of paint.
* Why?
- **To seal the surface ** (preventing them from soaking into the surface and causing the gloss level to flash .)
- create a good bond between substrate and the
paint
means : the underlying surface, this could be natural stone or masonry wall.
Substrate
prymer Types:
*1.Alkyd (oil-based)
*2.Latex or acrylic (Water-based)
*A …..’s main job is to prepare the specific surface.
*Different materials (metals, brick, wood, plaster, concrete)
require …..having specific characteristics
*a different …..is needed especially for absorbent surfaces
(such as wood)(shellac primer), or creating compatibility
between a subtract and a finish (such as plastic laminate)
primer
is a liquid material. It gets dried to
a lovely finish.
* is the top-coat. It is a performance
coating, but it is also decorative.
* Like primers, may also be oil
based or water – based.

Water-Based Paints VS Oil-Based Paints
Water-Based Paint
Majority of the paints sold or used today
The primary carrier of the pigment is water
Quick drying and has a minimal odor
Easy cleanup
Resistant to cracking
Release fewerVOCsduring the drying process.
(Volatile Organic Compounds)
Oil-Based Paints
Needs longer time to dray
Attractive Gloss
Durable and more resistant to scratches , fingerprints and other stains
long-lasting and resistant to the degenerative effects of water and air.
Components of paints
Additives
Binders
Pigments
Fillers
Diluents
*: change the characteristics, making the paint stable, fast-drying,
mildew resistant, flame retardant.
Additives
: responsible for the toughness of the paint, bind the other ingredients
into a film.
binders
: powders, usually minerals that impart color but also affect gloss
levels. It provides opacity and color.
Pigments
: a special type of pigment that serve to thicken the film, support its
structure and increase the volume of the paint. are usually cheap, such as
diatomaceous earth, or clay, etc
Fillers
- : the thinner or carrier that makes the paint liquid enough to spread dissolves or disperses the binder, allows the coating to spread out
Diluents
….. coating used for high traffic floors , and additives are introduced to paints for antifungal,
antimicrobial, mildewcide or other pesticides
Epoxy
…..floor coatings are commonly used for commercial and industrial flooring.
* …..coatings are normally
applied over concrete floors to provide a high-performance,
smooth, and durable surface that can last many years and withstand heavy loads.
Epoxy
How to Specify paint?
1.Quality Grades
2.Formulations
3.Gloss Level
Comparison of two quality levels of paints.
Specification Grade
Geared to residential market
Higher resin improves washability
Higher cost
Higher sheen level
Contractor Grade
eared to commercial market
Lower resin content results in lower sheen level and lowers watchability
Economical compared to specification grade
Water-based and Oil based are the two broad
categories (based on the solvent)
Oil based paints
Alkyds (modified oil) dry harder and faster than traditional oil paints.
* Oil paint dose not simply dry, but oxidized in a way that produces extra hardness, which makes it ideal for moving parts, such as windows frames or any thing movable
water based paints
The solvent in water-based paints may be latex or acrylic.
* less toxic in general.
* Dry faster and easier to use
* Some latex paints are odor-free
Surface imperfection will be highlighted
* Expert preparation of the surface is necessary.
* Prep work will be easily judged by the perfection of
reflection in the surface.
High gloss 85 % or more
Surface imperfections will be visible.
* Expert preparation of the surface.
Gloss paint 75 to 85%
A little less shiny, a little less washable
* less of a need for a perfect surface
* Specified more often than gloss paint
Semi gloss paint 40 to 75%
Soft sheen
* Can be cleaned with a soft cloth and mild soap
Satin 25 to 40%
- Close to the sheen of satin
- View sample side to side in order to discern the
difference - Still washable
Eggshell 10 to 25%
- Good at hiding imperfections
- Also referred to as velvet and suede finish
Matte 5 to 10%
