1. States Of Matter Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is the particulate theory of matter
All matter is made up of particles.
These particles are in constant motion, temperature affects the movement of particles
There are spaces between the particles.
Particles have forces of attraction between them
What evidence supports these particles
Diffusion
Expansion On Heating
Brownian Motion
What is Osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a region of higher water concentration to a region of lower water concentration through a selectively permeable membrane.
What are the uses of Osmosis
In Food Preservation:
Salting or sugaring foods draws water out of microbes by osmosis, preventing spoilage.
In Labs:
Used in experiments with dialysis tubing to model osmosis.
In Plants:
Helps absorb water from the soil into root hairs.
In Animals:
Helps regulate water balance in red blood cells and other cells.
