UNIT 1-Matter Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is matter
Anything that has a mass and occupies space
What type of energy does matter have
Kinetic Energy
What is diffusion
Movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until evenly distributed
which property can be used to determine if a substance is pure
Boiling point[a pure substance will have a distinct boiling point, while a mixture will boil over a range of temperatures.]
What is elements
Substances containing on type of atom only
What are the only elements that exist as liquids in room temperature
1.Caesium
2.Mercury
3.Gallium
4.Bromine
What are the differences between metals and non-metals
Metals are shiny, good conductor of heat and electricity,Solid, malleable while non-metals are dull, poor conductors, solid liquids and gas, brittle
What are compounds
Substances containing two or more different types of atoms, chemically bonded together
How are the names of metals/non-metal compounds formed
The name of the metal remains first
The non-metal will end with -ide
eg. Magnesium and oxygen
= Magnesium Oxide
What is a radical
A group of atoms which remains bonded together during a chemical reaction
What is the formula for
1.Sulphuric Acid
2.Nitric Acid
3.Ammonia
- H₂SO₄
2.HNO₃
3.NH3
What is the difference between mixtures and compounds
SPEC - Mixtures
Separated easily
Properties are the same as constituent elements
Energy is not given out or taken when mad
Composition of elements is variable
