Hydrogen (H₂)
Test: Hold a lit splint at the mouth of the test tube.
Result: Yuh hear a squeaky pop sound.
Oxygen
Test: Insert a glowing splint (not flaming eh!) into the gas.
Result: The splint relights.
Carbon dioxide
. Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)
Test: Bubble the gas through limewater (calcium hydroxide).
Result: Limewater turns milky/cloudy.
Ammonia
Ammonia (NH₃)
Test 1: Smell it carefully – strong choking smell.
Test 2: Hold damp red litmus paper over the gas.
Result: Paper turns blue – it’s alkaline.
Chlorine
Test 1: Smell – sharp, choking bleach scent
Test 2: Hold damp blue litmus paper
Result: It turns red first (acidic), then white (bleached)
Sulfur dioxide
Test: Bubble gas into acidified potassium manganate(VII) solution (purple).
Result: Solution turns colourless.
