10: Transpiration, Transport, and Support in Plants - Practical Flashcards
(6 cards)
10.1 Demonstration of the occurecne of transpiration
A transparent plastic bag encloses the aerial part of a well-watered potted plant and it is sealed around the base of the stem with sticky tape. It is left in bright light for 2 hours.
State the expected observation and suggest a test with its expected result.
A layer of moisture and drops of liquid are formed on the inner surface of the plastic bag.
The liquid is tested with dry cobalt chloride paper, and the dry cobalt chloride paper turns from blue to pink.
10.2: Abundance of stomata on the upper and lower surfaces of a TD leaf
A terrestrial dicotylenodous leaf is picked from a plant and immersed in a beaker of hot water. The number of bubbles coming of from each side of the leaf is noted.
Explain why air bubbles appear on the leaf surfaces when the leaf is put in hot water.
When a leaf is put in hot water, the air inside the leaf expands and comes out from the leaf surface through the stomata. Therefore air bubbles appear on the leaf surface.
10.2: Abundance of stomata on the upper and lower surfaces of a TD leaf
A terrestrial dicotylenodous leaf is picked from a plant and immersed in a beaker of hot water. The number of bubbles coming of from each side of the leaf is noted.
Explain how the abundance of stomata on the upper and lower surfaces of leaves helps prevent excessive water loss in terrestrial dicotyledonous plants.
As the leaves of terrestrial dicotyledonous plants are usually oriented horizontally, their upper surface faces the sun while their lower surface does not. Hence, the upper surface of the leaf is hotter than the lower surface. The smaller number of stomata on the upper leaf surface compared to that on the lower surface helps reduce water loss by evaporation.
10.2: Relative abundance of stomata on both sides of different leaves
What is the aim of the experiment?
To study the relative abundance of stomata on both sides of a leaf of different types of plants.
