10.2 ELECTRONS IN ATOMS Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What do electrons occupy?
A
Shells/energy/levels/orbit
2
Q
What are the rules to write electron configuration?
A
- First shell can hold 2 electrons
- Second shell onward can hold 8 electrons
- Electrons fill first shell first, the remaining electrons will go to the next shell
3
Q
Do elements of the same group have the same amount of electrons at their outermost/valence shell?
A
Yes
4
Q
Do elements from the same period have the same number of shells?
A
Yes
5
Q
What does the electron arrangement determine for their chemical properties?
A
- Outermost electrons determine where it can or cannot form bonds with other atoms
- Determines its stability as well as what kind of reactions it will undergo
