10.6 COVALENT STRUCTURE Flashcards

(5 cards)

1
Q

What are the properties of simple molecules?

A
  1. Nitrogen molecules are attracted to each other weakly
  2. Weak intermolecular bond
  3. Little energy is needed to melt nitrogen
  4. Low melting point
  5. Other substances exist as simple molecules such as oxygen and methane also have low melting point
  6. Most are in the gas or liquid state at room temperature

Q

What are the properties of giant covalent structure?

A
  1. All atoms are bonded by covalent bonds in giant lattice structure
  2. A lot of heat energy is required to break the thousand of strong covalent bonds in giant structure
  3. High melting and boiling points
  4. Exist as solid in room temperature
