10.6 COVALENT STRUCTURE Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What are the properties of simple molecules?
A
- Nitrogen molecules are attracted to each other weakly
- Weak intermolecular bond
- Little energy is needed to melt nitrogen
- Low melting point
- Other substances exist as simple molecules such as oxygen and methane also have low melting point
- Most are in the gas or liquid state at room temperature
2
Q
What are the properties of giant covalent structure?
A
- All atoms are bonded by covalent bonds in giant lattice structure
- A lot of heat energy is required to break the thousand of strong covalent bonds in giant structure
- High melting and boiling points
- Exist as solid in room temperature
3
Q
What is the melting/boiling point of ionic compounds, why?
A
High, because of its strong ionic bond
4
Q
What is the melting/boiling point of covalent bonds? Why?
A
Low, because of its weak intermolecular bonds
5
Q
What is the melting/boiling point of giant covalent bonds? Why?
A
High, because of its strong covalent bond
