11.4 THE PERIODIC TABLE: GROUP 1 Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are the physical properties of group 1 elements?
Like all metals:
1. Shiny when freshly cut
2. Conduct electricity
Unlike all metals:
3. Can be easily cut with knife
What happens in group 1 of the periodic table from top to bottom?
- Positive ion get bigger
- Electrostatic attraction between positive ions and negative electrons get weaker
- Break easily
- Melting point decreases
What are group 1 elements’ reactions with water?
- Exciting reaction with water
- The reaction makes hydrogen gas and alkaline solution
What is the word equation for group 1 elements?
Element + water -> Element hydroxide + hydrogen
Elements in the same group will have the same chemical properties, why?
They have the same amount of electrons at the outermost shell
- Group 1 and Group 2 metals have the name chemical properties
How do you prove the existence of hydrogen?
- Place a lit splint in the gas
- Splint goes out and make a squeaky pop sound, the gas is hydrogen
How do you prove the product solution is alkaline?
- Colour change after drop universal indicator is used
- Colour change to red purple
- Prove the solution is in alkaline
How do you explain the pattern of group 1 elements reacting with water?
- Atom gives its outer electron to an atom of another element
- From top to bottom of group 1, the outer shell gets further from the nucleus
- Electrostatic attraction between the nucleus and outer electron lessen
- Outer electron easier to give away
- Reaction more vigorous from top to bottom
What is the trend for group 1 elements reacting with water?
Reaction more vigorous down the group
