10.4 bio Flashcards
(9 cards)
Nondisjunction
when chromosomes fail to separate during cell division, resulting in daughter cells with an abnormal number of chromosomes
trisomy
a condition where an individual has three copies of a chromosome instead of the usual two.
Monosomy
a genetic condition where a diploid organism has only one copy of a chromosome, instead of the usual two copies
autosomes
chromosomes in a cell that are not sex chromosomes
Sex chromosomes
specific chromosomes involved in determining the biological sex of an organism,
How nondisjunction leads to incorrect number of chromosomes
failure of chromosomes to separate properly during cell division
What determines human biological sex at birth
he presence or absence of a Y chromosome
What happens to a zygote for each type of chromosomal abnormality (deletion, duplication, inversion, translocation)
a loss of genetic material (deletion), an extra copy of genetic material (duplication), a change in the order of genes (inversion), or the movement of genetic material to a different chromosome (translocation)
Determine the type of reproductive system (male or female) and the number of Barr bodies produced per cell for a given set of sex chromosomes
For an individual with XX sex chromosomes, they have a female reproductive system and will have one Barr body per cell.
