Comparing the causes and the effect of natural selection vs. genetic drift
Natural selection favors traits that increase an individual’s survival and reproduction, leading to changes in allele frequencies over time. Genetic drift, on the other hand, is a random process that can alter allele frequencies, especially in small populations, without necessarily promoting adaptation.
Natural selection
a fundamental mechanism of evolution, where organisms with traits better suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing those advantageous traits on to their offspring.
Genetic Drift
a process of evolution where the frequency of gene variants (alleles) in a population changes randomly over time.
Variation
the process of changing or differing from a standard or norm.
Fitness (make sure this is the biology/natural selection definition!)
an organism’s ability to pass its genetic material to its offspring.
