3.12 Polymerisation Flashcards

1
Q

What is condensation polymerisation?

A

Condensation polymerisation takes place when two monomers react and small molecule, often water or hydrogen chloride is eliminated.

Q

What are esters formed from, and what are polyesters formed from (+ what is the small molecule that is formed?)

A

Esters are formed on reaction between carboxylic acids and alcohols. Polyesters (+H2O) are formed when dicarboxylic acids react with diols

Q

What are amides formed from, and what are polyamides formed from (+ what is the small molecule that is formed?)

A

Amides are formed on reaction between carboxylic acids and an amine. Polyamides (+H2O) are formed when dicarboxylic acids react with diaminoalkanes.

Q

Why are addition polymers less biodegradable?

A

Because they are made up (normally) of strong, C-C bonds, and are non polar, meaning they are at less threat of nucleophilic attack.
