1.1.2 Separating Mixtures Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is a mixture?
A material composed of two or more different substances that are not chemically bonded.
What is a homogenous mixture?
A mixture where different substances are in the same state and composition. Any sample taken will be uniform
What is a heterogenous mixture?
A mixture that is not uniform. Different substances may be in different states and phases.
What is filtration?
A separation technique where a liquid is separated from an insoluble solid. Liquid particles are small enough to flow through a filter paper, while the insoluble solid remains on the filter as it is too large.
What is a filtrate?
The solution that flows through the filter paper during filtration.
What is residue?
The insoluble solid that remains in the filter paper after filtration.
What is evaporation?
A method for separating a soluble solid in a solution. The solution is evaporated over a heat source, while the solid remains. The solution is lost in this process.
What is simple distillation?
A separation technique that separates two or more liquids base on different boiling points. The component with the lowest boiling point vaporises first and is condensed and collected in a receiving flask. This is repeated for each liquid.
