1.2 Atomic Structure Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is an atomic model?
A way of accurately representing the experimental evidence about atoms in the simplest way possible
What is an electron?
A negatively charged subatomic particle that orbits around the nucleus of an atom.
What is a neutron?
A subatomic particle within the nucleus of an atom that has no electrical charge. It’s mass is approximately the same as a proton.
What is a proton?
A positively charged subatomic particle within the nucleus of an atom.
What does the atomic number represent?
The number of protons within an atom.
What does the atomic mass represent?
The total mass of the nucleus of an atom.
How can the number of neutrons in an atom be found?
By subtracting the atomic number from the atomic mass.
What is an anion?
A negatively charged atom
What is a cation?
A positively charged atom
