Always assume that any symptoms that arise while or soon after working with a pesticide are due to the pesticide
What should your immediate response to pesticide poisoning be?
Leave the treated site, apply appropriate first aid, and seek medical help (if warranted) immediately
When should you seek medical attention for possible pesticide poisoning or injury?
Whenever someone:
becomes ill while or soon after working with pesticides or in a pesticide treated area
swallows pesticide
get pesticide in their eyes
exhibits symptoms of injury following dermal or inhalation exposure
experiences enough dermal or inhalation exposure that common sense tells you to get help
What actions should you take if medical attention is necessary
have a copy of the pesticide label with you, provide as much detail as you can about the exposure, describe the victims condition
What is the basic first aid for oral exposure to pesticides?
If not swallowed:
rinse mouth with plenty of water
drink at least 1 quad tof water or milk to dilute small amounts of pesticide that may have been swallowed
If swallowed:
Determine if you should induce vomitting
What is the basic first aid for DERMAL exposure to pesticides?
remove all contaminated clothing
drench exposed skin in water
wash skin with soap and water and rinse well
gently dry skin and wrap in a cloth if necessary
loosely cover burns with a soft dry cloth
What is the basic first aid for inhalation exposure to pesticides?
carry victim to fresh air
lie down and loosen all tight clothing
keep victim warm and quiet
keep victim’s chin up to ensure air passages are open
What is the basic first aid for eye exposure to pesticides?
act quickly
hold eyelids open and wash eyes with a gentle stream of clean water
do not use chemical or drugs unless instructed to do so
direct water across eyes to aid in flushing
rise for 15 min with large amounts of water
flush under the eyelids
cover with clean cloth and seek medical attention
When is it safe vs not safe to induce vomiting?
induce vomitting only if the pesticide label and medical professional tell you to and only as a first aid measure until the victim can get medical attention
What are the symptoms of shock?
skin is pale, moist, cold , and clammy eyes are vacant and lackluster breathing is shallow and irregular plus is weak rapid and irregular may be unconscious
How do you respond to someone in shock?
keep the victim:
flat on back with legs up
warm enough to prevent shivering
quite and reassure the person
Who can administer antidotes to a person who has been exposed to pesticides?
only by a qualified physician
Where should you keep a first aid kit?
readily available where’ve you keep or work with pesticide such as your work vehicle, storage area, and where you mix/load
