bacteriology 10 Flashcards

1
Q

shared features of pasteurellaceae

A

gram negative rods (short rods or coccobacilli)
facultatively anaerobic (Some like increased CO2)
oxidase positive
most are non-motile
grow in blood agar-except histophilus, glaserella, avibacterium (chocolate agar)
variable growth on macconkey agar even though gram negative

Q

where is pasteurellaceae

A

normal flora of mucus membranes of animals and birds
URT (nasal cavity and nasopharynx)
digestive track
lower genital tract
some carrier animals and birds-URT (nasal cavity and nasopharynx)
none survive in the environment for a long time

Q

pasteurellaceae transmitted

A

occur in site near where these bacteria occurs as part of the normal flora
transmission by
inhalation
direct inoculation either locally or systemically

5
Q

how do pasteurellaceae cause disease

A

attachement-fimbriae (pili) or adhesins
avoidance of phagocytosis-Capsule- 5 types of capsule in P. multocida
cellular toxicity-exotoxin-large role in disease
local and systemic effects-endotoxin
opportunistic infection
some disease caused by P multocida, host and environment factor plat less of a role
strains involved are not normally part of the NF and are better pathogens

pasteurella multocida-rhinitis and atrophic rhinitis

A

respiratory disease in rabbits

Q

pasteurella multocida-wound infection

A

bite wounds or licking open woulds
oral flora (mixed infection)-pasteurella and strict anaerobes
cat bits are more commonly infected than dog bites

Q

pasteurella multocida-septicemia

A

not usually normal flora (present in carriers and not not require much host compromise
bovine hemorrhagic septicemia-associated with certain capsule (B and E)-exotic to USA

actinobacillus lignieresii

A

wooden tongue
ruminants (Sheep and cattle)
result of trauma to oral cavity
multiple pyogranulomatous abscessed

17
Q

actinobacillus pleuopneumoniae

A

predominantly a pathogen of pigs
grower and finisher pigs
predisposing: crowding, poor ventilation
causes severe fibrinous pneumonia and pleuritis-subclinical to acute, lesions are hemorrhagic and necrosis

18
Q

actinobacillus suis

A

septicemia in pigs
1-8 weeks old
invasion of respiratory tract
edema and petechiae

19
Q

goaeserella parasuis

A

pigs
bronchonpneumonia-2nd to viral/mycoplasma infection
glasser disease
septicemia and polyserositis- inflammation of multiple serosal surfaces

20
Q

goaeserella parasuis

A

pigs
bronchonpneumonia-2nd to viral/mycoplasma infection
glasser disease
septicemia and polyserositis- inflammation of multiple serosal surfaces
caused by stress

21
Q

histophilus somni

A

a pathogen of cows
invades and disseminates via the bloodstream
respiratory disease
thrombotic meningoencephalitis
reproductive failure

22
Q

avibacterium paragallinarum

A

23
Q

how to diagnose pasteurellaceae

A

sampling from sterile sites
transportation to the lab ASAP
some of these bacteria have specific cultural requirements
PCR for A. pleuopneumoniae, A suis and toxigenic strains of P multocida (Atrophic rhinitis)
