What are peripheral devices?
Peripheral devices are hardware devices that are not essential to the running of the computer system.
They connect to the system and provide additional functions.
Examples: input and output devices
What is an input device?
A device that allows a user to input data.
Examples:
-Keyboard
-Mouse
-Scanner
-Graphics Tablet
-Microphone
-Webcam
-Sensor
What does a keyboard do?
It is made up of keys to input characters and symbols
Uses: To write a report, inputting data into a database
What does a mouse do?
It is a pointing device used to select items on a screen
Uses: navigating a user interface by clicking on icons
What does a scanner do?
It converts hard copy text or images into a digital format
Uses: inputting a photo into a graphics software for editing
What does a graphics tablet do?
Controls the computer by using a stylus on a tablet.
Uses: Creating digital illustrations
What does a microphone do?
Converts sound waves (analogue) into electrical signals to a sound card which converts analogue to digital.
Uses: voice recording, Talking on VOIP software
What is a webcam?
Inputs video and still images directly into a computer
Uses: video conferencing
What is a sensor?
Takes and inputs readings from the physical environment e.g. changes in temperature
Uses: automated central heating systems, security systems
What is an output device?
A device that outputs data in response to a user input.
Examples:
-Monitor
-Projector
-Printer
-Plotter
-Speakers
-Headphones
What does a monitor do?
It outputs an image to the user e.g. a photo or a document
Uses: viewing the user interface, watching movies
What does a projector do?
It outputs an image onto a wall or a screen.
Uses: viewing the user interface, watching movie
What does a printer do?
It produces hard copies of digital documents and images on paper.
Uses: a hard copy of a report, printing digital photos
What is a plotter?
Specialist type of printer which draws to a very high quality on very large paper.
Uses: Drawing vector graphics
What does a speaker do?
It amplifies analogue signals (sound waves) sent from the sound card to the user to hear.
Uses: listening to music or someone talking
