He said that the costs of education, such as buying school equipment (like pens, books and transport) place a burden on poorer, working-class families. Poor children have to ‘make do’ with the equipment they are given; this can lead to bullying and them isolating themselves which. This can lead to poor attainment in exams.

A

He said that stigma surrounding Free-School Meals (FSM) stopped many families from claiming them. This stigmatisation explains why 20% of children who are eligible for FSM don’t take up their entitlement.

A

They said that poverty acts as a barrier, as those who live in poverty do not have the money to attend a private school. This means that they have to attend poorer quality schools, which may lead to lower attainment.

What did Howard say about diet and health?

A

Howard said that a poor diet and lack of food would decrease the child’s energy in school - This would affect their health and immune system. This would also affect their concentration levels, which means they would attain worse exam results, as they do not understand what they are learning about. This means that children may be absent from school (due to illness) which would affect their knowledge and understanding of certain topics, which would affect their attainment. Poor nutrition in a child’s diet means they will have a weaker immune system - This means that they are more susceptible to illnesses, which means they will have more time off school; this will affect their attainment and will cause them to underachieve!

What did Coldwell, Pike and Dunn say about housing?

A

They studied 118 working-class and middle-class, 2 parent English families with two children aged 4-8, who provided reports on behaviour. The results of their study confirmed the link between household chaos and parenting, and indicated that chaos in a household can lead to children having more of a temper/bad behaviour in schools (‘acting out’). Moreover, children do not have a place to properly do their homework, which means that they will underachieve, as they may be punished for not completing their work and they may not understand what they are learning.

They discovered that working-class students are 5 times less likely to apply to univeristy, due to the fear of debt!

She found out that working-class students were more likely to apply to more local universities than middle-class students. By applying to more local universities, working-class students could stay at home and save on travel and boarding costs.
