What does Durkheim argue that the education system provides, in comparison to the family?
SECONDARY SOCIALISATION = The family provides Primary Socialisation!
What does the family pass onto children?
Particularistic (particular) norms and values that are targeted towards their family.
What does Durkheim argue that Secondary Socialisation passes onto children?
Universalistic (universal) norms and values that are shared by broader and wider society.
What does Secondary Socialisation allow individuals to become?
It helps individuals become fully-functional, normal members of society; this helps society as people know how they should behave (the norms, values and expectations of society).
What does the term ‘Norms’ refer to/mean?
‘Norms’ refers to behavaiour and attitudes that are considered ‘normal’ in society!
What does the term ‘Values’ refer to/mean?
‘Values’ refers to things that people consider to be important to them!
What do Functionalists believe happens to individuals in society, in reference to ‘Norms’ and ‘Values’?
They believe that all members of society are ‘socialised’ into these ‘Norms’ and ‘Values’; first through the Family (Primary Socialisation) and then through the Media, the Education System and Religion (Secondary Socialisation).
