Q

What is the structure of Sutra?

A

-sutra is constructed in an episodic structure. The work has no linear through line or narrative instead it is a collection of sections exploring different themes and box formations. It is split into 18 sections, defined by the changes in music and formations of the boxes

Q

Why did Larbi create Sutra and how did this impact on its structuring

A

-he created Sutra after he went to the temple to observe the life and culture of the Shaolin monks after struggling with physical, mental and creative fatigue as a result of the successful touring of Zero Degrees with Akram Khan. He wanted a reciprocal exchange with the chief Monk who was equally as interested in Larbi and his choreography
-the work starts with the relationship between Dong Dong and Larbi being shown, as Dong Dong was the first monk to accept him, and it ends with Larbi integrated with all the monks in the courtyard performing Kung Fu as a collective

Q

Describe the purpose of humour within the transitions of the work

A

-they create highlights and are a contrast to the intensity demonstrated in the dance sections
E.g at end of Sword when Dong Dong steals the sword
E.g when the monks sit up in their boxes and Dong Dong turns around having missed it
