Specialised Cells Flashcards
1
Q
red blood cell function?
A
to transport oxygen in the blood
2
Q
features of a red blood cell?
A
- contains the protein haemoglobin
- no nucleus - more space for haemoglobin
- biconcave shaped (pinched disk) to increase the surface area so oxygen can enter and leave the cell more rapidly
3
Q
sperm cell function?
A
to transport male genetic material to the egg cell
4
Q
sperm cell features?
A
- flagellum (tail) - to allow the sperm cell to swim
- many mitochondria - to provide the energy needed for swimming
- acrosome - package of enzymes, to digest the jelly layer surrounding the egg cell
5
Q
palisade (leaf) cell function?
A
to carry out photosynthesis
6
Q
palisade (leaf) cell features?
A
- many chloroplasts - trap light energy for photosynthesis
- tall and thin - cells can pack tightly together so more of the light reaching the leaf is absorbed
