Structure of the Circulatory System Flashcards
(17 cards)
what is the function of the circulatory system?
to transport substances around the body
what are the three things the circulatory system requires?
- a liquid to transport substances in - the blood
- a pump to move the liquid - the heart
- a series of pipes to direct the liquid to the correct places - the blood vessels
what blood vessels transport deoxygenated blood?
- renal vein
- hepatic portal vein
- hepatic vein
- vena cava
- pulmonary artery
what blood vessels transport oxygenated blood?
- renal artery
- mesenteric artery
- hepatic artery
- aorta
- pulmonary vein
do humans have a double circulation?
yes
what happens in the pulmonary circulation (1/2 parts of the circulatory system)?
deoxygenated blood is pumped to the lungs and oxygenated blood returns back to the heart
what happens in the systemic circulation (2/2 parts of the circulatory system)?
oxygenated blood is pumped to all the other organs of the body and deoxygenated blood returns back to the heart
what vessel transports blood from the lungs to the heart?
pulmonary vein
what vessel transports blood from the heart to the lungs?
pulmonary artery
what vessel transports blood away from the heart to the rest of the body?
aorta
what vessel transports blood to the liver?
hepatic artery
what vessel transports blood to the gut?
mesenteric artery
what vessel transports blood from the gut to the liver?
hepatic portal vein
what vessel transports blood to the kidneys?
renal artery
what vessel transports blood away from the kidneys?
renal vein
what vessel transports blood away from the liver?
hepatic vein
what vessel transports blood from the rest of the body to the heart?
vena cava
