Magnetism Flashcards

1
Q

What is a ferromagnetic substance?

A

A substance that can temporarily acquire magnetic properties when in the presence of a
magnetic field. When the magnetic field is removed, it loses its magnetic properties.
Nickel, Cobalt and Iron are ferromagnetic substances.

Q

How do ferromagnetic substances acquire magnetic properties?

A

If we examine iron under a microscope, we can see that it is made up of regions
called domains. Each domain acts like a tiny magnet with its own north and south
poles. When iron is not magnetized (not subjected to a magnetic field), its domains are
not aligned. When iron is magnetized (subjected to a magnetic field), its domains are
aligned. The more domains there are, the more powerful the magnet.

Q

What does the right thumb rule indicate?

A

1) Right thumb points toward the negative end of the wire.
2) Fingers wrap around in the direction of the magnetic field.

Q

(est) How do you use the right-hand rule on a solenoid?

A

1) Find the positive end of the coiled wire of the solenoid. Follow the wire.
2) Wrap fingers of right hand around the solenoid, following the path taken by the
positive wire.
3) Thumb will point to north.

Q

(est) How do you transform a solenoid into an electromagnet?

A

To transform a solenoid into an electromagnet, a ferromagnetic substance is
inserted inside the solenoid, creating a core. This results in a very powerful magnet,
which can be turned on and off.
