What is Hyperaesthesia?
Increased sensitivity to any stimulus
What is Hyperalgesia?
Increased sensitivity to painful stimulus
What is Paraesthesia?
Pins and needles / burning sensation
What is Dysaesthesia?
Inappropriate sensation to a stimulus
What is Allodynia?
Pain provoked by a non-painful stimulus
What is Synesthesia?
Neurological condition where information meant for one sense stimulates several senses
What are the 3 ways Peripheral Nerves can be affected?
- Axonal Degeneration (toxic, metabolic, physical)
- Demyelination
- Vascular Nerve Damage
Investigations for Peripheral Nerve Damage (3)
- Nerve conduction studies
- CSF
- Biochemistry
What is the most common cause of neuropathy in the developed world?
Diabetes
What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome?
- When a person’s own immune system harms their
body’s nerves - Peripheral neuropathy
- Predominantly motor
What percentage of Guillain-Barre Syndrome need respiratory support?
20% of patients may need respiratory support
Clinical Presentation of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (3)
- Classically ascending paralysis with a range of
severity - Mild weakness to complete paralysis
- Recovery is spontaneous usually after a few weeks
What is the mortality rate of Guillain-Barre Syndrome?
Mortality rate 5%
How is Guillain-Barre Syndrome managed? (3)
- Support
- Plasma Exchange
- IV Immunoglobulin
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
