Stem Flashcards

1
Q

Stem cells

A

Stem cells are unspecialised cells in the body that have the potential to develop into specialised cell types that have been lost through illness or injury.
Some examples are blood cells, muscle cells, or nerve cells.

Q

Differentiation

A

Mitosis ensures that daughter cells have exact same genes, the diff is the process in which cells become specialized because as they undergo mitosis specific genes become activated

Q

Totipotent

A

The potential to create any type of cell for embryonic development, including the embryo itself and the membrane associated with it, the cells of the embryo in the first couple of mitotic dic after fertilization is only totipotent cell. (Eg embryo before inner cell mass)

Q

Multipotent

A

Potential to form a number of diff cell types or all cell types within one particular lineage, for eg, blood stem cells create WBC, RBC and platelets. Skin stem cells produce diff types of skin cells. Embryotic sc, adult sc and cord blood sc are all types
