  • The New Right therefore ideas were mainly about reducing the role of the state in education through marketisation & privatisation.
  • Therefore many cuts were made to the education budget.

What are academies?

A
  • Publicly funded, dependent schools.
  • They have greater control to innovate & raise standards, greater governing body autonomy etc.
  • Receive the same level of per pupil funding but are able to use their budget with more freedom.
  • By 2022, 80% of secondary schools & 39% of primary schools were academies.

What are free-schools?

A
  • All ability state funded schools set up in response to what local people what & need in order to improve education.
  • Schools were opened in demanded to what was needed in the local area.
  • Teachers don’t need a teaching qualification.

What are critcisms of free-schools?

  • Allen (2010) argued research from Sweden where 20% of schools are free schools, its only children from highly educated families who benefit.
  • They are highly selective, even more so than nearby schools.

A
  • An award for pupil who achieve a grade c or above in GSCES in english, maths, science, mfl & a humanity.
  • Ensure pupil are broadly educated & helps them progress.

  • Practical training courses.
  • In 2012, Gove ordered 96% of GSCE equivalent qualifications were stripped from league tables.
  • Removed due to a concentration of performance of league tables.
  • 85% of teachers argued they were valuable.

  • Gove made it so A-levels were a 2 year linear course examined at its conclusion from 2015.
  • New league table was added for pupil who took facilitating subjects such as latin, biology & maths.

  • In 2010. tuition fees were increased from 3000 to 9000 per year.
  • They scrapped EMAs for 16-18 year olds but due to protests replaced them with the bursary.
