What is NPO?
A
- The researcher observes the group without taking part in it

What is overt NPO (ONPO)
A
- It is a non participatory observational method based on observing people with their consent
-The researcher may sit with an observation schedule & systematically commit observations.

What are advantages of ONPO?
A
- Ethical as it’s overt.
- Positivists would favour this method.
- Easier to analyse the data collected.
-Less training is needed.

What are weaknesses of ONPO?
A
- People’s behaviour may change if they’re made aware.
- Pre-made table may mean findings are limited.

What are disadvantages of using structured NPO in education research?
A
Validity :
- Meanings which pupil & teachers attach to behaviour may be ignored.
Observer presence:
Teachers & pupil’s behaviour may be put off & reduce validity.

What are advantages of using structured NPO in education research?
A
Practical:
- It is easily for an observer to sit in the back of a classroom & is not disruptive.
Reliability:
- They’re easy to replicate.
