Q

What is the state of the holdings of estates? How has this changed in recent years?

A

Wine business is highly fragmented, with almost 4,000 estates.
There has been a decline in very small estates (often managed on a part time basis) over the past few decades, and an increase in the number of producers with more than 5 ha (managed full time).

Q

What are Heurigen?

A

Small inns or taverns that serve simple food and local wine, many of which have outdoor spaces for eating and drinking.
They’re most frequently open in the late summer and autumn, but some open all year round.
The name comes from heurige, meaning ‘this year’s’.

Q

What is the state of Austrian wine exports?

A

Following the wine scandal, Austria moved to the production of higher quality wines, both in the home market and exports.
In terms of exports alone, in the last 15 years there was a massive increase of bulk exports from around 20m L in 2000 to over 60m L in 2003, but sits at around 7m L in 2018.
In the same time, bottled exports have risen steadily from 15m L in 2000 to nearly 50m L in 2018.

Exports account for nearly 20% of all production.
The main market for volume (just under 50% total exports) and value (just over 50%) is Germany.
The next most important by volume are Switzerland and the USA.
