Fordyce spots
Small sebaceous glands, completely healthy.
Found on buccal mucosa and lips

Linea alba
White, horizontal line along the occlusal plane
Hyperkeratosis
Associated with parafunctional habits

Geographic tongue
Irregular pattern of red areas and white borders
- due to loss of filliform papillae, leading to atrophy and hyperkeratinisation.
Typically asymptomatic, variation on normal anatomy
Can be sensitive to hot or spicy foods, avoid triggers.

Fissured tongue
Small grooves on the dorsal of the tongue

Encourage goofed oral hygiene with light tongue brushing

Reassure, stop smoking, stay hydrated, lightly brush tongue.

Desquamative gingivitis - not a diagnosis, not caused by plaque but can be associated with it.
‘Shedding’ of outer layer
Manage periodontal disease in these cases.

Issues with tx?
Torus palatinus. Variety of normal anatomy.
Can be a response to parafunctional habits.
Difficulty with denture provision, very difficult to remove.
These are known as (bony exostosis), benign overgrowth of calcified bone.
What questions should be asked if someone has bony exostosis?
GI symptoms? - can be related to Gardener’s syndrome
Monitor, especially if asymmetrical or constantly changing
What is this?
Possible causes?
Physiological pigmentation
More common in non-white ethnicities
Due to increased melanin
Can be associated with addisons disease, smoking etc
