141: Type II diabetes Flashcards
(15 cards)
what is HbA1c?
glucose binds to haemoglobin, forming the A1c subtype. It can be used as an indicator of glucose levels over the preceding 4 weeks. Red blood cells live 120 days.
how does a biguanide work?
improves insulin action. e.g. metformin
how does a sulphonylurea work?
increase insulin production e.g. gliclazide.
name a biguanide…
metformin
how do metiglinides work?
increase insulin production
name some sulphonylureas…
gliclazide, glimepiride, glibenclamide, tolbutamide
name some metiglinides…
repaglinide, nateglinide.
how do alpha-glucosidase inhibitors work?
delay glucose absorption
what is acarbose?
alpha-glucosamidase inhibitor. delays glucose absorption.
how do thiazolidinediones work?
increase peripheral sensitivity to insulin
name some thiazolidinediones….
rosiglitazone and pioglitazone
what is incretin?
a name for a group of hormones that stimulate insulin production by the beta cells of the islets of langerhans in the pancreas. e.g. GLP-1 (glucagon like peptide 1)
first line for blood glucose control?
metformin ( then add sulfonylurea, then move to insulin)
what is SGLT2
sodium glucose cotransporter in the kidney helps reabsorb glucose…block it in diabetes as possible therapy.
name some SGLT2 inhibitors…
canagliflozin, dapagliflozin,empagliflozin, ipragliflozin
