exercise physiology Flashcards

1
Q

anaerobic metabolism

ATP-PC or phosphagen system

A
  • ATP production during high intensity, short duration exercises - 11m sprint
  • process almost instant: phosphocreatine -> ATP
  • provides E for muscle contraction up to 15s
  • does not depend on long chemical reactions
  • does not depend on O2 transport to muscles
  • ATP and PC stored within contractile mechanisms of muscle

Q

anaerobic glycolysis

lactic acid system

A
  • major supplier of ATP during high intensity, short duration (sprint 400-800m)
  • stored glycogen split into glucose -> split again to pyruvate through glycolysis, E released forms ATP
  • no O2 required
  • results in lactic acid formation - causes muscular fatigue
  • 50% slower than PC system and can provide 30-40s muscle contraction
  • does not require O2
  • only uses carbohydrates (glycogen and glucose)
  • release enough E to synthesize small amounts of ATP

Q

aerobic metabolism

oxygen system

A
  • used doring low intensity, long duration exercise (running a marathon)
  • yields most ATP by requires series of complex chemical reactions
  • E throug oxidation of food – fatty foods, amino acids, glucose with O2 release
  • provides E as long as there are nutrients to utilize
