16
Q

Sex hormones

A
  1. Estradiol
  2. Testosterone
17
Q

Why do psychological disorders tend to show up during puberty?

A

The hpa axis is associated with both puberty and stress

18
Q

Predicting puberty

A

Gender, body fat, stress levels, and genes

19
Q

Gender and puberty

A

Girls tend to hit their growth spurts before sexual maturity and boys hit it after

20
Q

Body fat and puberty

A

In girls, body fat often indicates when she is ready for sexual maturity (around the 100 lb marker).
Often, the higher body fat equals earlier mensturation

21
Q

Stress and puberty

A

Increased stress can hasten the hormonal onset of puberty, as cortisol triggers the hpa axis

22
Q

Early onset puberty

A

Psychologically, it is unhealthy, due to the societal standards of reproducing much later in life. There is a disconnect between the body and societal expectation. Adolescents do not care as long as they are going through puberty at the same time as their friends.

23
Q

Early onset puberty in boys

A
  1. Boys who mature first have a positive self image and high social standing
  2. More at risk to use alcohol, become a delinquent (aggressive behavior) , and have premature sexual relations
24
Q

Early onset puberty in girls

A
  1. Girls who mature first have greater satisfaction upfront, and tend to get more male attention
  2. More at risk to use alcohol and drugs, and develop eating disorders and depression
  3. They are at risk of attracting older boys, resulting in being taken advantage of and ending up in abusive or controlling relationships
25
Q

Sex education

A

Lacking sex education seems to be associated with teen pregnancy and contraction of sti’s

26
Q

Intuitive thinking (dual processing)

A

An emotional thought that begins with a belief, assumption, or general rule that is quick and powerful
EX: a gut feeling

27
Q

Analytical Thinking (dual processing)

A

A slow, formal, logical thought derived from hypothetical deductive thinking that involves a rational analysis of many factors

28
Q

Biology of dual processing

A

The limbic system (our panic button) develops first in our brain, while the prefrontal cortex (our critical thinking) develops last
EX: emotions v judgement

29
Q

Do adolescents tend to chose intuitive or analytical thinking?

A
