origin: anterior superior iliac spine
insertion: upper medial surface of the shaft of the tibia
nerve: femoral nerve
flexes, abducts, and laterally rotates thigh at hip joint; flexes and medially rotates leg at knee joint
iliacus
origin: iliac fossa of the hip bone
insertion: with psoas into lesser trochanter of femur
nerve: femoral nerve
flexes thigh on trunk; when thigh is stabilized, flexes trunk on thigh as in sitting up from lying done
psoas
origin: transverse processes, bodies, and intervertebral discs of the 12th thoracic and five lumbar vertebrae
insertion: with iliacus into lesser trochanter of femur
nerve: lumbar plexus
flexes thigh on trunk; when thigh is stabilized, flexes trunk on thigh as in sitting up from lying done
pectineus
origin: superior ramus of pubis
insertion: upper end of linea aspera of shaft of femur
nerve: femoral nerve
flexes and adducts thigh at hip joint
rectus femoris

origin: anterior inferior iliac spine (straight head); ilium above acetabulum (reflected head)
insertion: quadriceps tendon into patella, then via ligamentum patellae into tubercle of tibia
nerve: femoral nerve
extends leg at knee joint; flexes thigh at hip joint
vastus lateralis
quadriceps femoris
origin: upper end and shaft of femur
insertion: quadriceps tendon into patella, then ligamentum patellae into tubercle of tibia

extends leg at knee joint
vastus medialis
