Preflight inspection - Wings

A
  1. Check flap
  2. Check aileron
  3. Check wingtip lights
  4. Check leading edge for any dents, surface contamination and general condition
  5. Dip tank
  6. Complete a fuel drain
  7. Check tyres (no bald spots and not flat)
  8. Check brake lines are fastened correctly and not leaking

A

Ensure there is a little wiggle and all hinges are correctly fastened, actuating rod is fastened correctly and also has a little bit of wiggle in it

Preflight inspection of wing - checking ailerons

A

Moving ailerons, check full and free movement. Then move up and hold secure with one hand (to ensure the wind doesn’t catch it). Check the actuating rod to make sure it is fastened correctly and has little bit of wiggle in it

A

You are checking for colour contaminants and water globules (water will present a clear colour and smell different to AVGAS)

- Radios (change to tower frequency, set next radio frequency)
- Emergency (Engine failure brief:
Engine failure on the take-off roll; Close throttle and stop. Engine failure after take-off with sufficient runway; close throttle and re-land.
Engine failure after take-off with insufficient runway; check forward, carb heat ON, close the

- Transponder = standby
- Lights = Off
- Flaps = up
- Fuel pump = Off
- Carb heat = Off

Shut down checks

A
  • Brakes: hold, park brake on
  • Throttle: 1200
  • ELT: check ARM and not flashing
  • Avionics (Radio OFF, Transponder OFF, EFIS OFF)
  • Throttle: below 1000
  • Ignition: L, R, OFF, back to BOTH
  • Mixture: idle cut off
  • Throttle: closed once prop has stopped
  • Ignition: off
  • Master: off

  • Alternator: light off and charging
  • Fuel pump: on and check pressure still green
  • Ignition: L, R back to both
  • Transponder: set correct code
  • EFD: on
    -Radios: on, listen to ATIS, contact delivery

A
  • Engine fuel drain
  • Check everything in the engine bay is in place, no wires frayed or broken and there are no obstructions
  • Check brake fluid

A

Check air inlets/engine compartment aren’t blocked and check the condition of the propeller for any significant dents. Check the condition of the nose gear strut and tyre

A

Check everything in the engine bay is in place, no wires frayed or broken and there are no obstructions. Check oil state and quantity (4 - 5.5 quarts)

A

Check all rivets are in place, there is no warping or dents
Aerials are fastened (don’t wiggle)
Static vent is not blocked / covered

A

Check condition and that bolts are fastened correctly, and that there’s no warping on the skin

Priming engine

A

If engine is cold prime 6 times, if engine is warm prime 4 times

Run up ignition check: max drop and max difference between L and R

A
  • Max drop = 175rpm
  • Max difference = 50rpm
