Chapter 4 - Newton's Second Law Flashcards
What is a Force?
A force is an interaction between two objects.
What is the definition of Friction?
Friction is when surfaces slide over one another in the direction that opposes motion. The atoms cling together.
Is Static or Sliding Friction greater?
Static friction is slightly greater.
How are Acceleration and Mass related?
Acceleration and mass are inversely related.
What is the weight of an object due to?
Gravity! (mg).
What is Newton’s Second Law?
An object’s acceleration is DIRECTLY proportional to the net force acting on the object and INVERSELY proportional to the mass of the object.
What is the equation for Acceleration? What is the other way to write this equation?
Acceleration (a) = net force (F)/mass (m).
F = ma
Do bigger or smaller objects fall faster in FREE FALL? Why?
They both fall at the same speed! This is because the ratio F/m is the same.
What does Air Drag depend on?
Surface area: The frontal area of the falling object
&
Speed: The speed of the falling object
What is Terminal Speed?
Terminal speed is when acceleration terminates.
What is Terminal Velocity?
Terminal velocity is when acceleration & direction terminate.
