What is Conduction?
Conduction is energy transfer from particle to particle while in direct contact. Conductors have loose outer electrons.
What is an Insulator?
An insulator is a poor conductor that can slow the transfer of heat.
Is air a good conductor or insulator?
Air is a good insulator. This is why your hand doesn’t get burned when you put it in the oven!
What is Convection?
Convection is heat transfer due to the motion of the fluid itself.
Do molecules collide with receding or approaching molecules?
Molecules collide with more RECEDING molecules.
What is Radiation?
Radiation is light energy from the Sun. It is in the form of electromagnetic waves.
What is the relationship between vibrations and wavelengths?
Low-frequency vibrations have long wavelengths.
High-frequency vibrations have short wavelengths.
What is Terrestrial Radiation?
Terrestrial radiation is radiant energy emitted by Earth.
What does it mean when something is Infrared?
Infrared waves are frequency waves that are invisible to the human eye.
What does a Net Absorber do?
Net absorbers absorb more energy than they emit.
What does a Net Emitter do?
Net emitters emit more energy than they absorb.
What color do surfaces that absorb light appear?
Black!
What is Newton’s Law of Cooling?
Heat loss is directly proportional to the difference in the temperatures between the object and its surroundings.
What is the Greenhouse Effect?
The greenhouse effect is where the Sun’s energy reaches the Earth’s atmosphere and some is reflected back into space while some is absorbed.
What would Earth’s temperature be without the Greenhouse Effect?
Without the greenhouse effect, Earth’s temperature would be -18 degrees C.
