Properties of water Flashcards

1

A

Decreases so requires less energy to change state to a gas

Q

Why does boiling point decrease from H20 to H2S

A

Because H2O has hydrogen bonds which are broken when state is changed
So because these are stronger they require more energy
And H2S does not form hydrogen bonds so instead energy breaks London forces instead

Q

Why is ice less dense than water

A

Because ice is a lattice shape arranged in hexagons and formed so the maximum number of hydrogen bonds can form
This causes H2O molecules to take up more space and be less dense than when it melts where the h2o molecules fill the space
