Sulcus and Fissures Flashcards
Runs downward and forward across lateral aspect of
the hemisphere and its lower end is separated from
posterior ramus of lateral sulcus
Central Sulcus (of Rolando)
Sulcus vs fissure vs gyrus
Sulcus - shallow
fissure - deep depression
gyrus - elevation
Separates parietal (sensory cortex) and frontal lobe
(motor cortex)
Central Sulcus (of Rolando)
Deep cleft found on the inferior and lateral surfaces of
the cerebral hemisphere. It consists of a short stem
that divides into 3 rami
Lateral (Sylvian) Sulcus
Divides frontal and parietal to temporal lobe
Lateral (Sylvian) Sulcus
Begins on the superior medial margin of the
hemisphere about 2 in. anterior to the occipital pole. It
passes downward and anteriorly on the medial
surface to meet the calcarine sulcus
Parieto-occipital Sulcus
Divides parietal and occipital lobe
Parieto-occipital Sulcus
Found on the medial surface of the hemisphere. It
starts under the posterior end of the corpus callosum
and arches upward and backward to reach the
occipital pole. It is joined at an acute angle by
parieto-occipital sulcus about half-way along its
length.
Calcarine Sulcus
Divides two occipital lobes
Calcarine Sulcus
Divides the brain into symmetrical left and right cerebral hemispheres or two parietal lobes
Longitudinal Fissure
longitudinal fissure contains the
falx cerebri, the anterior cerebral arteries, and the
corpus callosum.
