Male Reproductive System Flashcards
What are testicles?
Primary organ of male repro system, produce sperm and testosterone
What cell generates spermatozoa?
Seminiferous tubules
What cell produces testosterone?
Leydig cells
What structure is the site of storage for spermatozoa to mature?
Epididiymis (Savings account)
What is the scrotum?
It is the 2 lobed sac that contains and protects the testicles. It regulates temperature of the testicles
What is the tube that transports sperm cells from the epidiymis to the urethra?
Vas deferens
What are the 3 accessory glands and their functions?
- Seminal Vesicle: secretes the major portions of seminal fluids that add volume to ejaculate
- Bulbourethral gland: Secretes the gel portion or ejaculate
- Ampulla: Important for bulls rapid ejaculation
What is the male organ of copulation?
The penis
What is the retractor penis muscle?
It relaxes during mating and ejaculation and allows the sigmoidal flexure to straighten
What is the S-shape portion of the penis which straightens during mating and ejaculation?
Sigmoidal Flexure
What is the Glands Penis?
Corkscrew tip in boars or top of penis that is sensitive to pressure
What are the several differences between poultry male tracts and other farm animals?
- Testes are contained in the abdominal wall
- Each vas deferens opens into small papillae located in the cloaca wall
- Male poultry have no penis
- Male poultry have a rudimentary organ or copulation
- Sperm is stored in the oviduct and is capable of fertilizing eggs for:
- 30 days in turkeys
-10 days in chickens
What does underfeeding do to sperm?
Decreases cell formation
What happens to sperm when there is a deficiency in Vitamin A or protein?
Reduced amount of viable sperm
How do extreme high temperatures affect sperm?
Decrease in spermatozoa formation, increase non viable sperm
