Q

How is a modified postural drainage position different from traditional postural drainage positions?

A

In modified postural drainage the patient is placed in the same position that they would be in with the traditional postural drainage position, but without the head-down tilt (trendelenberg positioning)

Q

What is the general indication to use suctioning (as opposed to other secretion clearance techniques)?

Q

Adults should accumulate at least…..
minutes of
moderate-to-vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in bouts of …minutes or more to achieve health benefits according to the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines
Mark Complete

A

150, 10

17
Q

How can a physiotherapist promote decrease use of accessory muscles for breathing in a patient?

A

Teach patient deep diaphragmatic breathing and teach relaxation techniques

18
Q

What treatment techniques are considered independent controlled breathing techniques?

A

ACBT and autogenic drainage

19
Q

What does MET stand for?

A

Metabolic Equivalent

20
Q

What is one MET?

A

1 MET is defined as the amount of oxygen consumed while sitting at rest

21
Q

What device is frequently prescribed post-op to prevent atelectasis?

A

Incentive Spirometer

22
Q

How should you program an exericse program for a patient who is very deconditioned and can’t exercise for long?

A

Break up the exercise session into multiple chunks in the day instead of one long session

23
Q

What are the four stages of coughing?

A

1) Inspiration,
2) Glottal Closure,
3) Compression,
4)Expulsion

24
Q

What condition(s) would most benefit from pursed lipped breathing?

A

Copd

25
Q

A systolic blood pressure greater than ….. an indication to terminate an exercise session
mmHg would be

A

200

26
Q

In which phase of breathing would you perform percussions?

A

In the inspiratory and expiratory phase

27
Q

What device is used to help a patient with excessive secretion retention?

A

PEP device

28
Q

Which assistive cough technique is contraindicated in patients with GERD( Gastroesophageal reflux disease ) or recent abdominal surgery?

A

Heimlich-Type Assist (Abdominal Thrust)

29
Q

What is the difference between a huff and a cough?

A

A huff is a forced expiratory technique with an OPEN glottis, whereas a cough is a forced expiratory technique with a CLOSED glottis

30
Q

A diastolic blood pressure greater than ….an indication to terminate an exercise session
mmHg would be

A

110

31
Q

What methods are used to minimize complications with suctioning?

A

Infection control measures,
hyperoxygenation, hyperinflation
, limit suction time (10 - 15 sec) and allow recovery time (30 sec) between each pass, medication and sedation prior to procedure

32
Q

Huffing from mid to high lung volumes helps clear….. airways

A

Proximal

33
Q

What is the difference between viral and bacterial pneumonia?

A

In bacterial pneumonia, there is high grade fever with chills and chest pain and the cough is productive. Also breath sounds are absent over pneumonia and WBCs are increased.

In viral pneumonia, the cough is dry and WBCs are normal with multiple patchy infiltrates bilaterally on X ray.
