What does the epidermis contain?
Contains a few nerve terminals.
How is the epidermis nourished?
Avasculature, nourished by underlying vascular dermis.
What does the dermis contain?
Nerve terminals for pain, pressure and temperature.
Hair follicles.
Sebaceous glands (oil glands)
Where is the dermis, what is it made of and how is it supplied?
It is: dense layer that provides skin tone and accounts for toughness of.
Make: collagen and elastic fibers.
Supplied: by arteries entering its deep surface (form a cutaneous plexus of anastomosing arteries)
Where is the superficial fascia located?
Between dermis and deep fascia.
What is superficial fascia and what does it contain?
It is: loose connective tissue and stored fat that provides most of bodies fat storage, thickness can vary greatly.
Contains: sweat glands, superficial blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and cutaneous nerves. Cutaneous nerves course through superficial fascia sending only their terminal branches to the skin.
What are the functions of the integumentary system?
Protection, containment, heat regulation, sensation, synthesis and storage of vitamin D.
