osmosis Flashcards
what is osmosis
net movement of particles from a high to low concentration across a partially permeable membrane
what is the water potential of pure water
0
whats the definition of water potential
the likelyhood of water molecuels to diffuse in/ out of/ into a solution
what does the water potential symbol look like
a trydant
explain what happens in osmosis
movement of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of high water concentration to an area of lower water concentration, in order to equalize the concentration of solutes on either side of the membrane.
what happens when there are different water potentials
osmosis occurs until both sides are equal
what happens to animal cells when placed in solutions with various concentrations
becuase they dont have a cell wall they are able to change size and shape
what happens to plant cells when placed in solutions with various concentrations
higher concentration of solutes than the cytoplasm of the cell, water will move out of the cell and it will become flaccid.
If the concentration of solutes is lower outside the cell, water will move into the cell and it will become turgid.
