Lecture 3 Flashcards
Graphite and diamonds result of
different bonding
Mineral pairs most abundant in
basalt pyroxene and p
Fast cooling magma produces
aphanitic texture
Phenocrysts in a porphytic texture reflects
slow cooling
Basalts are the most common
EXTRUSIVE rocks on earth
Glassy texture are the product
lower nucleation and lower growth rates than apaphanitic texture
Pahoehoe
ropy lava
Pillow lava
Formed in aqueous environment
Main gases
H2o so2 co2
How do volcanoes explode?
Gasses= volitaile
Gas is trapped under pressure in magma chamber
conduit is plugged
when conduit released pressure explodes
Volcanic gas
Gas bubbles trapped in cooled volcanic rock.
Gas bubbles called vesicles.
The way the gas escapes determines what kind of eruption
low-viscosity basalt
Easier for gas to escape smaller eruption
high-viscosity rhyolite
Hard for gas to escape =big eruption
Fumaroles
vents or openings at the surface where volcanic gases and vapors are emitted.
Pyroclastic material
Pyro = fire and clastic = fragment
