Current form of learning was scholasticism: old learning based on clergy memorizing, copying, and summariizng authorized texts (DID NOT ALLOW PLATO, ARISTOTLE, ETC)
Studia Humanitatis: advocated for the study of humanities;m promote gentlemen going into university not only to become members of the clergy, but to gain the knowledge needed to actively participate in society

Problems with Humanism

A

PROBLEMS: humanism was an elite movement that did not reach far beyond elite circles
Humanism was nostalgic in assuming that the Classical period was better than it was and caused problems with implementation of core ideals
Humanism nor the enlightenment serviced the society it existed in: it was difficult to emulate the classical period, it was excessively nostalgic/backward looking movement (enlightenment was extremely forward looking)

Art of the medieval period was extremely religious and capturing events in Biblical history, but humans were represented as perfect beings in the likeness of God, shown fully clothed to emphasize man’s dignity

Mimeticism: true imitation of nature, man and nature together; anatomically correct
Versimiltude: anatomical correctness, dissected corpse by people like Michelangelo to learn what the body looks like to bring out a true mimetic of nature)
Chiaroscuro: careful use of light, shading and perspective, give more accuracy to feel real (3D)
