Active Transport Flashcards
1
Q
what is active transport used by organisms for?
A
to transport substances against the concentration gradient
2
Q
how does active transport work?
A
the organism needs special carrier proteins in the cell membrane - these use ATP to provide the energy to move the substances across the membrane against the concentration gradient
3
Q
what happens to glucose in active transport?
A
glucose is absorbed by active transport in the small intestine and plants use active transport in their root hair cells to absorb mineral ions
4
Q
what is the definition of active transport?
A
the movement of molecules from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration using ATP
