Outline the process used by the government for making laws such as The Theft Act 1968. 3 marks (2017)
gov processes are used to make laws eg. green, white paper and multiple readings, committee stage and report stage followed by a royal assent. the bill then becomes an Act of Parliament. For example, the first reading is where the name of the bill (Theft Act) and the main aims are read out and a formal vote is taken. committee stage is where a group of representatives (committee) look at the bill to address any issues and suggest possible changes (3)
Identify four features of the parliamentary (governmental) law making process. 4 marks (2020)
in Parliament, to create a new law it starts with a green paper and a white paper. a green paper allows public consultation on a potential new law to be discussed. a white paper after consultation a white paper is created with formal proposal allowing a draft act (a bill) to be made and presented to Parliament. In addition, there’s a report stage where the committee report back to the House who then vote on any proposed changes. there is royal assent where the Monarch signs the bill and can’t refuse. (4)
