deferral dreams

Chapter 22

A

‘perhaps I shouldn’t worry. It’s not my doing, after all… It’s something for them to dream about, a little fantasy. What harm is there?’
- DEMEANING - discounts the last big hope as small/little
- not taking accountability (contrast to clones who generally do NLMG Tape) ‘my doing’
- ‘them’ - dehumanises/ less personal

A

‘we did it to prove you had souls at all… Did someone think we didn’t have souls?”… “It’s touching, Kathy, to see you so taken aback. ‘

lab rats

Chapter 22

A

‘in humane, cultivated environments, it was possible for them to grow to be as sensitive and intelligent as any ordinary human being. Before that, all clones-or students, as we preferred to call you-existed only to supply medical science.
[…] Shadowy objects in test tubes.’

  • HUMANS VS CLONES, VALUE, LIGHT + DARK
  • ‘grow to be as’ and ‘ordinary human being’ - implies trying it imitate humans and plant like verb implies lack of conciousness
  • ‘students’ as clones, to soften the blow
  • ‘humane, cultivated environments’ - clinical terms, dehumanising them human needs a humane environment?
  • QUOTE ABOVE has connotations of animal/plant

ship in the sea

Chapter 22

A

‘our little movement, …] we were all of us swept away. [a few paragraphs between]
the turning of the tide. I…] Our little movement, we were always too fragile I…] So long as the climate was in our favour, […] we were able to keep afloat’
- CLONE VALUE
- repetition of ‘little’ shows the worthlessness of the clones
- ‘tunrning of the tide’, ‘climate in our favour’ imagery of 1 boat against the whole ocean shows the tinyness and vulnerability, they are so fragile that thery depend on the whims of the crowd

Chapter 22

A

‘The world didn’t want to be reminded […] They didn’t want to think about you […] they wanted you back in the shadows. Back in the shadows where you’d been’
- LIGHT + DARK, CLONE WORTH
- ‘repetition of ‘back in the shadows’ - emphasising the lack of empathy displayed
- ‘shadows’- only the outline of a thing, they are just in the shadow/the shadow of real humans
- ‘shadows’ - dont want to see them, undesirable

magnus carlsen chess

Chapter 22

A

‘it might look as though you were simply pawns in a game. It can certainly be looked at like that. But think of it. You were lucky pawns.’

Q

trendy shi

Chapter 22

A

‘“it might just be some trend that came and went” I said. “But for us, it’s our life”
- CLONE VALUE
- ‘trend that came and went’ - similar to the way Hailsham is a ship in the sea at mercy of the whims and feelings of others
- contrast between ‘trend’ and ‘life’, one is much more minor, while one is major, but for people about clone lives they are one and the same, shows the insignificance

Q

hailsham wouldnt be the same

Chapter 22

A

‘Hailsham would not have been Hailsham if we hadn’t. Very well, sometimes that meant we kept things from you, lied to you. Yes, in many ways we fooled you. I suppose you could even call it that.
But we sheltered you …] and we gave you your childhoods.’
- CONTROL, DEMEANING
- ‘fooled’ - euphemism on the fact that they hid the grisly fate behind them, almost a childish payful verb
- ‘ I suppose you could even’ - grudging acception, swept away like no big deal, shows insignifcnce
- ‘you’ repetition emphasises the gratitude they are supposed to feel for all these actions done, when the opposite is true

-‘ look down’ - privelege of humans compared to clones, implies superiority
- ‘revulsion’ - body’s reaction to disgusting things, saying the clones are disgusting and odd
