sun to shade

A

’ glanced quickly at her face—as did the others, I’m sure. And I can still see it now, the shudder she seemed to be suppressing, the real dread that one of us would accidentally brush against her. … we all felt it; it was like we’d walked from the sun right into chilly shade.’
- supressing - theme of trying to keep in her feelings
- ‘dread, shudder’ contrasted to ‘brush againt her’ - shows the terror madame feels as strong words and feelings are used to describe a commonplace act (also acts like clones are poisonous)
- ‘from the sun to the chilly shade’ - LNK to theme of cold

Chapter 3 - Spiders

S P I D E R S

A

’ Ruth had been right: Madame was afraid of us. But she was afraid of us in the same way someone might be afraid of spiders. We hadn’t been ready for that. It had never occurred to us to wonder how we would feel, being seen like that, being the spiders.’
- simile of might be afraid of spiders to metaphor of being spiders shows the sinking in of the idea into their minds
- spiders has connotations of revulsion and disgust but at something below you, like a pest
- repetition of spiders emphasies this
- feel and spiders contrast as animal and human showing the misdirection between what the clones believe and what madame perceives
